In the year 1963 the "Universidad National de Cuyo" was restructured, bringing to Mendoza numerous musicians not only from Argentina but also from all over the world. The arrival of these prestigious musicians brought about two major improvements in " Universidad Nacional de Cuyo Orchestra" and in the "Julio Perceval Music School". At the time, the former became one of the best orchestra in the country and the latter was considered the best music school in South America. Juan José González was among those musicians who arrived in Argentina. He was first oboist and chair professor of that same instrument for thirty years.
Since his arrival in Mendoza, Juan José González was interested in knowing the qualities of canes that grew wild in the plain at the foot of The Andes. He never imagined that thanks to his research, years later, cane would be known all over the world.
At the beginning of the 80's, the saxophone market increased considerably and cane manufacturers started looking for new suppliers of raw material. It was only Argentina that was able to meet the demands of the market; on the one hand, Argendonax, S.A., owned by the Gonzalez family, and on the other hand, Cañas de Castilla, owned by the Rico firm.
Argendonax S.A. has five plantations with a total area of 54 hectares. At the moment, it is producing and selling raw material and blanks to numerous factories all over the world. It manufactures the well-known Zonda Reed and Gonzalez Single and Double Reed brands, made out of exclusive materials from
"Plantación de 3 de Mayo"- the biggest plantation in the world.
